Colonoscopy Cost in Shenzhen vs the US: What Self-Pay Patients Actually Pay

If you are paying out of pocket for a diagnostic colonoscopy — or same-day gastroscopy plus colonoscopy — English search results often mix facility fees, doctor fees, anesthesia, and marketing packages. This article separates those line items using published Shenzhen hospital reference prices and US Medicare / hospital cash-price data.

Who We Are and How to Read This Article

Last verified: 27 October 2026. Price figures were last checked against hospital and CMS sources on 14 October 2026. Where a 27 October re-check could not reopen an original page, this article keeps the 14 October verified values and says so explicitly.

GW Medical Concierge (ddbz.top) is a medical travel coordination service, not a hospital and not a medical provider. We help with appointments, interpreting, and on-site logistics. Doctors and hospitals make all clinical decisions. We do not promise any medical result.

Exchange rate used for CNY → USD on our pricing page: USD 1 = CNY 6.7249 (People’s Bank of China central parity via CFETS, 14 October 2026). You are billed in CNY.

Why “Colonoscopy Cost” Is Hard to Compare

A single number rarely answers the question. At minimum, ask what a price includes:

  • Facility / procedure room fee (endoscopy suite or hospital outpatient department)
  • Physician / gastroenterologist fee
  • Anesthesia or sedation (if you choose a “painless” exam)
  • Bowel-prep medication
  • Biopsy, polyp removal, and pathology if anything is found

US self-pay figures published from hospital price-transparency files are often facility fees only. Shenzhen hospital handbook figures for “ordinary” and “anesthesia” gastroscopy + colonoscopy are exam plus medication, with biopsy and EMR billed separately. That packaging difference is the main reason a raw “China vs US” comparison can mislead.

Shenzhen: Published Reference Ranges (Regular Service)

According to the Digestive Endoscopy Service Handbook of Shenzhen Qianhai Taikang Hospital, figures are charged at Shenzhen standard medical prices and are for reference only.

Gastroscopy + colonoscopy without sedation: ¥800–1,000 hospital fee (≈ $119–149 at the 14 October 2026 rate).

Gastroscopy + colonoscopy with sedation (“painless”): ¥1,200–1,600 hospital fee (≈ $178–238).

International department / VIP service: Quote on request.

Re-check note (27 October 2026): the handbook PDF and the exchange-rate figure could not be reopened during this re-check. Values above retain the 14 October 2026 verification.

  • Biopsy, polyp removal, and pathology are extra. The same handbook indicates biopsy-level removal is often under ¥2,000; EMR can be ¥2,000–5,000 or more, depending on what is done.
  • These are regular-service prices. International-department or VIP pathways are usually higher. We did not find an official published VIP tariff we could republish, so those stay Quote on request on /hospital-costs-shenzhen-guangzhou.

Practical takeaway: for a straightforward diagnostic exam without polypectomy, the Shenzhen standard-price band for a combined gastroscopy + colonoscopy with sedation is on the order of a few hundred US dollars — before any add-ons and before coordination fees.

United States: Medicare Benchmarks and Hospital Cash Medians

US figures below are for diagnostic colonoscopy (CPT 45378) and diagnostic upper endoscopy (CPT 43235). Unless a hospital tells you otherwise, treat them as facility rates. The gastroenterologist, anesthesia, and pathology are often billed separately.

Medicare 2026 ASC national unadjusted rate: $510.49 (colonoscopy 45378) and $497.85 (upper endoscopy 43235).

Medicare 2026 hospital outpatient base rate: $950.10 (45378) and $926.63 (43235).

Median hospital cash (self-pay) price: $1,744 across 1,423 hospitals (45378) and $1,545 across 1,568 hospitals (43235).

CMS ASC Addendum AA (October 2026) was re-checked on 27 October 2026; Medicare rates matched the 14 October verification. SelfPayRates CPT pages could not be reopened on 27 October; cash medians retain the 14 October retrieval used for our pricing page.

  • An ASC Medicare facility rate around $500 is a regulatory payment, not your bill.
  • The median hospital cash price for diagnostic colonoscopy alone is about $1,744 — still before doctor and anesthesia lines in many markets.
  • If you need both upper and lower endoscopy on the same day, expect two facility lines (or a bundled quote), plus sedation and any pathology.

Side-by-Side: A Careful Comparison

Combined gastroscopy + colonoscopy with sedation in Shenzhen (published regular-service reference): about $178–238 hospital fee (¥1,200–1,600); biopsy/EMR extra.

US side for the same “combined + sedation” package: our verified set has no single national cash median. Ask each facility for a written Good Faith Estimate covering facility + MD + anesthesia.

Colonoscopy facility fee alone: in Shenzhen it is already inside the combined band above; in the US, median hospital cash is about $1,744 and Medicare ASC about $510.

VIP / international pathway: Quote on request in Shenzhen; varies widely by US hospital.

Do not turn these figures into a “China is X times cheaper” marketing claim. Packages differ, currency moves, and clinical findings change the bill. Use them to decide whether a written quote is worth requesting.

What Typically Happens on Exam Day (Process Only)

This is a logistics outline, not medical advice. Your hospital’s instructions override anything here.

  • Pre-assessment: many centers require a recent ECG and an anesthesia assessment before a sedated exam. Some offer online pre-assessment; final fitness for sedation is decided on site.
  • Bowel prep: follow the hospital’s prep kit and diet instructions. Someone must accompany you if you receive anesthesia; you should not drive for 24 hours afterward (as stated in the Taikang handbook).
  • Exam: ordinary (no sedation) vs anesthesia pathways have different fees.
  • If tissue is taken: expect additional fees for instruments, polypectomy or EMR, and pathology — often billed after the procedure.
  • Reports: ask in advance whether an English summary is available and how long pathology takes.

Entry and Timing (Short Medical Trips)

Cost planning only works if you can enter lawfully. Full detail is on our China entry page (/china-entry-medical-travel). Summary below (facts verified 14 October 2026; 30-day visa-free end dates re-checked against embassy notices on 27 October 2026):

  • US passports: no 30-day unilateral visa-free entry. 240-hour visa-free transit may apply if you have a confirmed onward ticket to a third country or region and enter via an eligible port (including Shenzhen Bao’an and Guangzhou Baiyun). Round trips such as Hong Kong → Shenzhen → Hong Kong do not qualify — confirm your itinerary with +86-12367 or a Chinese embassy.
  • Canada, UK, Australia, and most (not all) EU states: 30-day visa-free entry currently runs until 31 December 2026 for the 48-country group. Medical treatment is not a listed visa-free purpose. If treatment is the main purpose of the trip, ask your Chinese embassy or consulate which visa (often L or S2) you need.
  • Hospital stays that run longer than planned may require a stay permit or visa extension through local exit-entry police — see /china-entry-medical-travel.

How Our Coordination Fee Fits In

Your total outlay has two separate parts.

Hospital fees are paid directly to the hospital at its published or written-quote prices. We do not add a markup to hospital bills.

Our coordination service fee covers planning, booking, interpreting, and on-site support. It does not include medical care. Current package prices are on /hospital-costs-shenzhen-guangzhou (service-fee rows are set by DDBZ; hospital rows are verified reference figures).

International-department endoscopy and any add-ons not listed on that page remain Quote on request.

FAQ

Are Shenzhen prices guaranteed? No. They are hospital-published reference ranges as of our last check. The hospital confirms the final amount in writing after clinical review.

Will my US insurance pay for Shenzhen? International medical services at partner hospitals are typically self-pay. Ask your insurer whether it reimburses care abroad before you travel.

Is “painless” the same as general anesthesia? Hospitals describe sedated (“anesthesia”) pathways in their own materials. Only the hospital’s anesthesia team can tell you what they will use for your case.

What if a polyp is found? Expect extra charges. Ask for a written estimate range for polypectomy / EMR and pathology when you request your quote.

Can you give me a VIP international-department price on this page? No. We only publish numbers we have verified from official sources. Those pathways are Quote on request — email us and we will ask the hospital for a written quote.

Do you perform colonoscopies? No. We are a coordination service. Licensed hospital staff perform all medical procedures.
